Mattress Firm and SleepScore Labs’ New Objective Sleep Study Reveals In-store Pillow Fitting Can Lead to More Sleep

HOUSTON, January 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Mattress Firm, the nation’s largest specialty mattress retailer, and SleepScore Labs, the company behind a comprehensive suite of data-backed sleep solutions, today announced significant objective sleep improvement results from SleepScore’s validation study of Mattress Firm’s pillow fitting process.

The study measured sleep before and after customers participated in the Mattress Firm in-store pillow fitting and found that the participants slept an average of 487 minutes more per month (or 8.1 hours) when using the new, fitted pillow , compared to her original pillow. This adds up to an extra night of sleep per month on average. The data was collected objectively using SleepScore Max, a touchless monitor that unobtrusively and objectively measures sleep at home. Participants also filled out daily questionnaires about their sleep.

“There are hundreds of thousands of products and services that promise to improve sleep, but very few backed by any real science or data,” said Colin Lawlor, CEO of SeepScore Labs. “This study shows that when sleep expertise and data combine to help people find the right pillow for them, it can significantly improve sleep quality.”

The in-store pillow customization process at Mattress Firm is designed to promote better sleep quality by taking into account each customer’s unique body and sleeping position to match them with a pillow that best suits their body type and sleep preferences. The study analyzed a total of more than 750 nights of objective and self-reported sleep data.

The key finding from this research is that the study found that customizing a pillow for participants based on their unique sleeping habits improved sleep quality and duration. Compared to their sleep on the previously used pillow, participants who experienced an in-store pillow fitting spent more time in bed, slept longer, and spent 10% more time in deep sleep, the sleep phase that helps the immune system function and metabolism, helps eliminate toxins remove and repair tissue damage from the brain. They also had more consistent sleep and spent less of the night awake after falling asleep. Coupled with SleepScore’s objective data, data from the participants’ questionnaire showed that those who slept with a new, customized pillow experienced better overall sleep quality (27% increase), improved ability to sleep through the night (36% increase ) and felt more comfortable. rested in the morning (24% increase) compared to using the original pillow.

“At Mattress Firm, we’re driven by our mission to help people around the world sleep better and feel great every day,” he said Josh Feinberg, EVP of Omni Channel Experience and Innovation at Mattress Firm. “Through our partnership with SleepScore Labs, we are fortunate to combine human expertise with sleep data and science to provide our customers with better sleep.
